SAN GABRIEL VALLEY— Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, Chairman of the MTA, along with federal, state and local officials and community members participated in the ceremonial groundbreaking of the ACE San Gabriel Trench Project today.
“The celebration today to break ground on the San Gabriel Trench was made possible by the collaborative effort between ACE, the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments, and the entireSan GabrielValleyworking together and advocating as one to acquire the necessary California Proposition 1B funds for construction,” said Supervisor Antonovich.
The 1.4 mile-long San Gabriel trench will eliminate at-grade crossings used by over 90,000 motorists and an average of 18 trains per day at the Ramona Street, Mission Road, Del Mar Avenue, and San Gabriel Boulevard intersections.
“Currently, train blockages result in an estimated 1,700 vehicle-hours of daily delay for residents and prevent first responders and public safety vehicles from travelling from one side of the city to the other,” said Antonovich. “When completed in 2017, this $336.5 million project will improve traffic safety by eliminating collisions at the crossings — – collisions which have cost lives here inSan Gabriel.”
“The project will create over 9,000 jobs over the five years of constructions and contribute to our national and regional economic competitiveness by enhancing the movement of goods through the ports ofLos AngelesandLong Beach– which together accommodates 44% of the nation’s containerized imports,” he said.
