Tragedy Highlights Need to Repeal State’s Reckless Realignment Plan
LOS ANGELES COUNTY – The accidental shooting death of a Pico Rivera man by deputies — in a gunfight with a state parolee under AB 109 — can be traced directly back to the Governor’s flawed realignment policy, announced Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich.
“Supervision of dangerous criminals like Ramirez should be the responsibility of the state — not the county,” Antonovich said. “While this tragedy needs to be investigated thoroughly by the Sheriffs Department’s, the Los Angeles County District Attorney and the Coroner, it also highlights the need to repeal the state’s broken realignment plan that allows a state prisoner to be transferred to Los Angeles County for probation supervision.”
On Friday, a 54-year old man was shot accidentally by a Sheriff’s deputy who mistook him for parolee Cedric Ramirez who had fired upon deputies prior to breaking into Mendoza’s home and holding his wife hostage.
