LOS ANGELES COUNTY — Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich directed the Departments of Mental Health and Children and Family Services to report back to the Board on the use of psychotropic medication to treat foster youth in Los Angeles County.
Recent statistics have indicated that foster youth are prescribed medication to treat mental health issues far more frequently than non-dependent adolescents.
“While the County falls slightly below the statewide average of one in four youth prescribed psychotropic mediations, it is still an alarming statistic,” said Supervisor Antonovich. “It is vital for the County to understand the full scope of the use of these medications on our foster children, especially in relation to mental health therapy and services that these youth should be receiving.
