LOS ANGELES COUNTY — On a motion by Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich and co-authored by MTA Directors Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Supervisor Don Knabe and Councilmember Ara Najarian, the MTA System Safety and Operations Committee voted unanimously to support Kinkisharyo’s efforts to build its United States rail car production facility in the City of Palmdale.
Unless the Palmdale plant can be secured by September 30, 2014, Kinkisharyo will be unable to meet its contractual commitment to deliver rail cars on time to MTA and other transit agencies nationwide without relocating.
“This vital facility will bring hundreds of jobs and tax revenues to Los Angeles County and state over the next few decades through the production of railcars that will be utilized locally and by transit agencies throughout the nation,” said Antonovich. “The current effort to stall the process forces Kinkisharyo to leave our county or the state — leaving skilled Los Angeles County workers unemployed.”
The motion directed MTA’s CEO and its Government Relations team to work immediately with the Governor and the State Legislature to intervene and resolve the current impasse between the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and Kinkisharyo and to fast-track elements of the CEQA process, all prior to Kinkisharyo’s deadline of September 30, 2014, to secure the Palmdale plant or seek another location outside Los Angeles County.
