For more than 94 years, the 134 Deodar trees (along Santa Rosa Avenue in Altadena) have been decorated with more than 10,000 lights to celebrate the Christmas season. The tradition began in 1920 when Frederick C. Nash organized the first tree lighting as a way to attract shoppers to his store. Today Christmas Tree Lane is recognized as the oldest large-scale outdoor Christmas display in the world and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and designated as the California State Landmark No. 990.
