They may claim to be safe, they may claim to be sane, but they’re definitely not legal in the Santa Clarita Valley, county and city officials said this week of personal fireworks that are on sale in some neighboring communities.
“Although legal consumer fireworks can be purchased relatively close to the Santa Clarita Valley, all fireworks are hazardous and can cause injury and present a significant threat of fire danger,” Santa Clarita City Manager Ken Striplin said Wednesday.
With the Fourth of July looming, Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich reminded residents that penalties for possession or use of fireworks can range from a fine of up to $1,000 to confinement in a county jail for up to one year.
Certain products, like M-80s and M-100s, are considered explosives and are a felony to possess, with penalties ranging up to 16 months in state prison, Antonovich said.
With all that in mind, city and county officials urged Santa Clarita Valley residents to take in one of the three professional fireworks shows planned for July 4 in the SCV:
Westfield Valencia Town Center
The city of Santa Clarita will host its “Fourth of July Fireworks Show” at Westfield Valencia Town Center starting at 9:15 p.m. KHTS AM 1220 will play a patriotic music sound track synced to the fireworks show.
Officials encourage guests to arrive early; traffic around the mall will be heavy and some roads will be shut down.
The Westfield Valencia Town Center is at 24201 Valencia Blvd. in Valencia.
Dr. Richard Rioux Memorial Park
A fireworks show in Stevenson Ranch begins 9 p.m. on the Fourth at the Dr. Richard Rioux Memorial Park.
Gates open at 6 p.m., and guests are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs and gas grills. Parking will be available only on streets surrounding the park.
Dr. Richard Rioux Memorial Park is located at 26233 Faulkner Drive in Stevenson Ranch.
Six Flags Magic Mountain
Six Flags Magic Mountain will celebrate the Fourth of July weekend with a musical salute featuring live bands in the theme park throughout the holiday weekend July 3-5. A fireworks display set to patriotic music will be featured each evening.
Six Flags Magic Mountain is located 26101 Magic Mountain Parkway.
