A free disposal day for residents of Sunland, Kagel Canyon, Lopez Canyon, West Chatsworth, Oat Mountain/Twin Lakes, Lake Manor and West Hills will be held on Saturday, April 23, at the Sunshine Canyon Landfill, located at 14747 San Fernando Rd. in Sylmar from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., announced Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich.
The free disposal day gives unincorporated area residents an opportunity to get rid of bulky household items, like furniture and appliances. Residents can bring up to one ton of these items to the landfill free of charge. Participants must provide proof of local residency. Participants are also advised to secure their loads to prevent spillage during transportation. Business waste or household hazardous waste, such as electronics, paint, or cleaning products will not be accepted. For locations to dispose of these items, contact LA County Public Works at (888) CLEAN LA or visit www.CleanLA.com.
Other free disposal services are also available at the Sunshine Canyon Landfill during the year, including free bulky item and free waste tire drop-offs. For further information about these services or to receive notification of future free disposal days, call (800) 926- 0607 or e-mail Public Works at SWIMS@dpw.lacounty.gov.
Residents can also give away surplus items through the Los Angeles County Materials Exchange, a free countywide service that facilitates materials exchange and finds markets for surplus materials. Further information about this service can be found at www.LACoMAX.com.
